A Series of Unfortunate Posters

Inspired by Lemony Snicket’s book series, A Series of Unfortunate Events, I designed these posters to embody the intrigue and apprehension that flows throughout the book series. I chose monochrome colors to focus on each poster’s main driving theme—fire, sickness, water, and resolution. In each poster, I used visual tension, leading lines, and a hidden secret to draw readers in.
This first poster is based on the first book in the series. The smoke design refers to the fire that the Baudelaire parent's died in. The quote comes from the front leaf of the book, where the author wrote short letters to his love, Beatrice.
The Second poster is from the second book, and uses a snake illustration to refer to the Incredibly Deadly Viper. Lemony Snicket's note to Beatrice gives a sense of foreboding and tension to the design.
The third poster is from the eleventh book in the series, and uses a submarine periscope at a perilous angle to continue the tension that has been building in both the poster series and book series.
The fourth poster is inspired by the last book in the series. This note to Beatrice, while foreboding, gives a sense of completion to the series and acceptance to Lemony Snicket's situation. The harpoon illustration ends the poster series, just like a harpoon ended the terrible story of the Baudelaire children's woes.
